Audax rides

‘Audax’ rides are longer distance rides with timed checkpoints and record cards organised under the supervision of  Audax UK , established in 1976. The word ‘audax’ is Latin for 'bold', and was first used towards the end of the 19th century. Audax rides run all year round, all across the UK.

We have two local audax events, organised by the Minehead Cycling Club. The Minehead audax rides are both about 100 km (approximately 62 miles) and cover some of the most beautiful countryside on Exmoor.

Riders entering these events will be given a route sheet and a record card, which is stamped at 2 or 3 timed ‘controls’, usually cafes or pubs. These are not races, with a minimum as well as maximum time for completion. Generally a comfortable, casual riding speed will get a reasonably fit rider around with plenty of time for coffee and cake breaks! The atmosphere is friendly, and riders often stop to help those with problems during the ride, however there is no support or marshals and each rider is expected to be able to look after themselves as a private cyclist on a public road.

There is a small entry fee for the event, to cover costs, plus a small insurance fee for those not a member of the Audax UK or CTC.

The Audax UK website (www.audax.uk.net) gives more information about the rides and organisation, as well as a calendar of events.
