Joint Porlock Hill ride/run
19th December 2011
Following an invitation from Graham Sizer, from the Minehead Running Club, we held our first joint event with a ride/run up the main Porlock Hill road.
The Minehead Cycling Club were not only well represented on the Hill but came away with the victor's spoils! On a mild, dry evening, fast times were expected and the large crowds were not disappointed. Andrew Miles, inspired no doubt by the prospect of a family 'double' (Mum was also riding) blasted his way up the tortuous zig zags to cross the line well inside 14 minutes, hotly pursued by Clive Atkins riding his vintage machine (no Compact there!!!), Keith Baker - clearly benefitting from his recent Thursday night club sessions - and Martin Foster (punctured on the ride over and again on the descent of the Hill). All finished ahead of the first runner, well inside 17 minutes. Others turning in superb rides were Will Wake (1st mountain bike), Michelle Miles (1st lady) and Mary and Paul Butcher (1st tandem).
The runners, keen to turn the tables, are hastily arranging an addition to the sporting calendar, some time around Easter. Early rumours indicate a tough course including the Toll Road, some interesting off-road downhill sections and a fast finish to the Weir.
Congratulations to all the 35 competitors who humbled 'The Hill' and thanks to Graham Sizer of the Running Club for the invite.
Cycling Club Christmas Dinner - Kildare Hotel
16th December 2011
The Club enjoyed an excellent Christmas meal at the Kildare. The usual embarrassing speeches and bad jokes didn’t spoil the food and the Christmas Spirit. A few photos below!
