Timed Hill Climb
Porlock Toll Road
Well done to all those who entered our timed sprint up the first half of Porlock Toll Road. We were very lucky with the weather, and pleased that 15 riders felt up to the challenge!
The winner was Andrew Miles, in a time of 8:23 - can it be beaten?
Sunday 15 May 2011, Wheddon Cross, Nr Minehead
Our second annual Hilly 26 mile time trial attracted 20 riders on a blustery but dry Sunday morning. We had some fantastic cycling performances with last year’s record time smashed by more than 8 minutes!

Race Report
Well it was quite a memorable day: great weather, a very safe but very challenging course, and everyone talking about Paul Jones’s amazing new course and event record, smashing the old record by more than 8 minutes. He came past me going uphill about 5 mph faster than I was, sitting down, on the tri-bars, smooth as silk, and he vanished from sight in about 20 seconds – something special.
But Leigh Pinchen and Michael Waterjohns were both inside the old record too: pity we can’t give new-record prizes to all three.
I hope you like the “Surprizes”: just a bit of fun which spreads the rewards further through th
e field. Anyone fancy a fixed-wheel prize next year?
The only sad story of the day was Phil Carbutt’s return to time-trialling after many years’ absence, and he punctured.
There was obviously a clash of dates today, leading to very few entries from outside the Minehead area, and we’ll look at this more carefully next year. It’s nice to record that about half the Minehead CC riders were being introduced to time-trialling for the very first time in their lives, and that some of them even claim to have enjoyed it.Many thanks to the timekeeper and the marshalls, and we hope to see you all again next year, but the date may be different.
If you enjoy this kind of race, you may like to know that I also promote a 36-mile hilly event in April in the Cotswolds for the Wychwood RC, full details in the handbook. It’s a similar type of course, but less severe and more rolling. I know it’s a long way from here, but it could be worth considering.
